MDs state that infertility is referred both to a medical problem, and social one. 15% of the couples break up namely because they cannot have children. The half of them would be treated with medications (drugs, surgery). The rest would require assisted reproductive technologies (ART), which include:
- in vitro fertilization (IVF);
- surrogacy;
- use of donor cells;
- Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI);
- intrauterine insemination (IUI);
- oocyte cryopreservation (freezing and storage);
- preimplantation genetic diagnosis of the embryo (PGD);
- TESA method for collecting sperm from the men.
The IVF is one of the assisted reproductive technologies used in the patients with infertility. Such conception differs from the classical one in that it occurs outside the mother's body. The necessary genetic material is taken from the mother and father. In laboratory conditions, the oocytes are fertilized, then the embryo is transferred to a special incubator. If the fertilization process and development of the embryo occur normally, then one or two embryos are selected for transfer to the woman's uterus, usually on the 5th day.
