National Defense University named after the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan

By the Decree of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated February 27, 2002 No. 815 “On the Reorganization of the State Institution Military Academy of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Kazakhstan” and the Directive of the Minister of Defense of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated May 2, 2002 No. 1/29/1/1248 “On Organizational Measures in Military Educational Institutions of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Kazakhstan,” the Military Academy of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Kazakhstan was relocated to the city of Shchuchinsk, Kokshetau Region.

By the Decree of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated August 21, 2003 No. 1173 “On Measures to Improve the System of Military Education,” the Military Academy of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Kazakhstan was transformed into the state institution National Defense University.

The National Defense University trains officer personnel under higher professional education programs for the Armed Forces, other troops, and military formations of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the following specialties:

Strategic Management in Military Affairs

Doctoral Studies

In accordance with the decision of the Council of Defense Ministers of the Collective Security Treaty Organization dated November 30, 2005, the National Defense University was included in the List of educational institutions for the joint training of military personnel for the armed forces of the CSTO member states. The Defense University provides training of military personnel with postgraduate professional education.

Military Institute of the Land Forces

The history of the institute traces back to the Alma-Ata Higher Combined Arms Command School, established in 1970 on the basis of a Resolution of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. By Decree of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated February 11, 1997 No. 3353, the I.S. Konev AHACCS was transformed into the Military Academy of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Kazakhstan. By Decree of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated February 27, 2002 No. 815, the Almaty Higher Military School of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Kazakhstan was separated from the Military Academy.

On October 31, 2003, by Resolution of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan No. 1080, the Almaty Higher Military School of the Armed Forces was renamed the Military Institute of the Land Forces. The main task of the institute is to train highly qualified Land Forces officers.

The Military Institute of the Land Forces provides training of officer personnel under the higher military professional education program in the following specialties:

In accordance with the decision of the Council of Defense Ministers of the Collective Security Treaty Organization dated November 30, 2005, the Military Institute of the Land Forces was included in the List of educational institutions for the joint training of military personnel for the armed forces of the CSTO member states, which includes military educational institutions of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The institute is equipped with a modern educational and material base and a variety of technical training tools. Lecture halls, training laboratories, offices, and classrooms are equipped with everything necessary for training military specialists at the current level of science and technology.

Modern technical training aids, including computer and computing equipment, are widely used in the educational process.

During the existence of the military educational institution, about 10,000 specialists have graduated, more than 400 of whom served in Afghanistan and other hotspots and participated in peacekeeping operations in Tajikistan and Iraq, for which they were awarded high government honors.

For their courage and heroism, three officers—A.E. Shakhvorostov (posthumously), N.M. Akramov, and S.N. Gushchin—were awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union, and a star discovered by scientists in the constellation Columba was named after Lieutenant Oleg Chivilev.

In 2008, by Decree of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the high title of “Halyk Kaharmany” (People’s Hero) was awarded to Lieutenant General B.E. Ertaev, a graduate of this university.
